Enrichment in the Winter

Living in a northern climate does not preclude winter activities with the animals. In fact, a sunny winter day offers offer bug-free time to both play and work on important details even with the horses.

One option is to work on practical details such as standing still for mounting. Gene takes a sunny winter day to work with rescue horse, Benny.

There’s also time to play games – which are wonderful opportunities for enrichment.  A sunny winter day is a perfect opportunity to help Flicka practice her cone carrying skills!

Flicka, picks up the cone. Kinna and Gene started teaching her the clicker signal target game with a cone. It’s a great way for horses to learn the new language. Flicka eventually decided it would be fun to pick it up!
Flicka then decided she'd like to hold on to it, and eventually walk with it in her mouth -- Kinna and Gene helped encourage each of these steps with the clicker signal and reinforcement.
